Overview of SMS

Short Message Service (SMS) is a communications protocol allowing the interchange of short text messages between mobile telephone devices.

SMS as used on modern handsets was originally defined as part of the GSM series of standards in 1985 as a means of sending messages to and from GSM mobile handsets. Since then, support for the service has expanded to include alternative mobile standards such as ANSI CDMA networks and Digital AMPS, as well as satellite and landline networks.

SMS messages are 160 characters long. This includes spaces.

SMS text messaging is the most widely used data application on the planet, with 2.4 billion active users, or 74% of all mobile phone subscribers sending and receiving text messages on their phones.

The SMS technology has facilitated the development and growth of text messaging.

Most SMS messages are mobile-to-mobile text messages, though the standard supports other types of broadcast messaging as well.

PrimoSMS interfaces with the SMS network via our high speed servers. We have the ability to send 100 SMS per second. 500,000 SMS can be sent in 1.5 hours.

All SMS providers are not the same

There are a number of cut rate SMS providers in the marketplace.

While there is a reduced cost, the quality of the delivery can be affected for these providers.

Primo has several providers based at overseas locations. We log the transmission rates of each provider in real time. If transmission rates begin to be affected, Primo automatically swaps to the more efficient service. This ensures that you get the highest quality delivery for the most cost effective price at all times.

Examples of events that can cause increased network loads and can affect a swap: These events happen rarely, however when they do occur, Primo will swap to another route for your SMS to be delivered in a timely manner.
